There are a whole lot more benefits to having a pedicure than just walking out with gorgeous feet. There are actually medical benefits when it comes to looking after your feet as well! Stop and think about just how any hours a day you spend standing, walking, or having your feet resting on the ground. Our feet take a lot of abuse from us, so it is important that we treat them right. One thing that almost everyone on this earth suffers from are calluses.

While a slight thickening of skin does serve the purpose of protecting our feet, having thicker than usual calluses can actually be very unhealthy. Thick calluses can leave us standing “off kilter” and have us walk with uneven pressure. This may cause pain in our feet, legs, or even radiate up to our back simply because our gait has been affected by thick, undesirable calluses! When you go in for a pedicure, they will remove these calluses for you, reducing them to a fine, slightly thicker layer of skin on the bottom of your feet.
Here’s another thing to consider: the massage. Yes, the massage feels good, but there is actually a medically beneficial purpose to it as well. A calf and foot massage helps stimulate the blood flow in both our feet and legs. Women often suffer from spider veins and discomfort in their feet and legs due to a reduced or hindered blood flow to these areas, so a massage will guarantee that your blood continues to reach and nourish these areas of your body.
Massaging certain parts of the body also can send a signal to a different part of the body, which can stimulate those areas as well. Most of those who perform pedicures have also taken reflexology and are familiar with how touching and massaging a particular area on a person’s foot can affect another area of the body. They are also familiar with pressure points and how to utilize these pressure points to help improve health or alleviate discomfort.
Now come the essential oils. Essential oils have been known for centuries to help heal the body in several different ways. Depending on the essential oil being used, you may see an improvement in:
  • Circulation
  • Mood
  • Memory
  • Focus
Be sure to ask the spa technician about how different oils can produce different effects. If you need to relax, they will know the oil to use. If you find your mind cloudy and fuzzy, they can recommend a few different oils or oil combinations that will actually stimulate your brain and help you think more clearly.
So not only are you leaving the spa or salon smelling fantastic, but your body is in fantastic working order too! Oh and don’t forget that you also get to walk out of the place with beautiful toes…
